Aquatic environments are widely recognized for their supportive qualities. Buoyancy reduces joint loading, expands movement accessibility, and allows participants to move with greater ease. For aqua fitness professionals, however, an equally influential factor often goes underexamined:
Water reduces stability.
This duality—supportive yet destabilizing—becomes even more nuanced when equipment is introduced into the aquatic environment. Traditional aquatic tools such as noodles, dumbbells, and hand buoys rely primarily on buoyancy. They create upward force, assisting or resisting movement depending on positioning. These tools are effective for endurance, range of motion, and general conditioning, but they provide passive resistance and limited directional feedback. Elastic bands and tubes introduce variable resistance that increases with stretch. While useful on land, they often lose efficiency in water due to drag, slack, and inconsistent tension, and they do not provide continuous feedback throughout the full range of motion. Making Waves Worldwide: How the AEA Convention United, Inspired, and Recharged the Global Aquatic Fitness Community

The recent IAFTC Convention was much more than an educational event — it was a global gathering of passionate professionals united by movement, wellness, innovation, and community. From the energy on the pool deck to the excitement in the Marketplace, the convention successfully showcased the continued growth and evolution of the aquatic fitness industry.
One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s event was the strong international attendance. Aquatic professionals traveled from all over the world to participate, creating a truly global learning environment. Brazil alone brought approximately 20 attendees, and professionals also traveled from countries including Korea, Japan, Australia, Spain, Iceland, Jamaica and others. Four continents were represented throughout the event, which created an incredible exchange of ideas, culture, programming styles, and teaching philosophies.
This international presence elevated the experience for everyone involved. Instructors and presenters were exposed to different approaches to cueing, movement, choreography, rehabilitation, and wellness programming. The energy of having so many cultures and perspectives together in one place created a sense of excitement and possibility that could be felt throughout the convention.
Another major strength of the event was the educational diversity offered throughout the programming. The convention successfully blended traditional aquatic fitness classes with therapeutic, rehabilitative, athletic, and wellness-based programming. One particularly valuable component was the integration of aquatic physical therapy and rehabilitation-based education into the convention schedule.
This blend created tremendous inspiration for both aquatic instructors and physical therapists. Aqua instructors gained a deeper understanding of movement mechanics, corrective exercise principles, injury recovery, and functional training applications. At the same time, many physical therapists and rehabilitation specialists were exposed to the energy, creativity, motivational skills, and community-building strengths that group aquatic instructors bring to programming.
The crossover between these two worlds benefits everyone. Physical therapists can discover new ways to make rehabilitation more engaging and community-oriented, while group exercise instructors can learn more science-based movement strategies that improve safety, effectiveness, and long-term participant success. The collaboration between clinical and fitness professionals helps elevate the entire industry.
The convention also did an outstanding job of embracing a wide variety of teaching styles and aquatic formats. Rather than competition between styles, there was a genuine spirit of respect, curiosity, and unity throughout the conference. The presenters themselves brought tremendous passion and expertise to the event. Sessions were energetic, practical, and immediately applicable for instructors working with a wide range of populations, including active agers, athletes, rehabilitation clients, and general fitness participants. Attendees left with ideas they could implement immediately within their own facilities and communities.
The Marketplace and sponsor participation further strengthened the event experience. Attendees had opportunities to connect directly with companies, educational organizations, and equipment providers that are actively shaping the future of aquatic fitness. The Marketplace created a lively environment for networking, product discovery, and collaboration.
Operationally, the event ran extremely smoothly. Transportation, scheduling, and session transitions were organized efficiently, allowing attendees to focus on learning, networking, and enjoying the overall experience. Behind every successful convention is a dedicated team, and the professionalism and support of the staff were evident throughout the event.
Perhaps most importantly, the convention reminded attendees of the importance of live, face-to-face interaction. In an increasingly digital world, there is something incredibly energizing about learning together in person. Conversations between sessions, networking opportunities, shared movement experiences, and spontaneous moments of encouragement created a strong sense of connection and renewal.
The Aquatic Exercise Association Convention succeeded because it offered much more than continuing education. It created inspiration, global collaboration, professional growth, and meaningful human connection. It demonstrated that aquatic fitness continues to evolve while remaining one of the most inclusive, creative, and supportive areas of the fitness industry.
Most importantly, attendees left feeling energized, motivated, and excited about the future of aquatic programming worldwide.
